Dear Members,
We’re very excited to be involved in the audition round of a new TV show called Jive Soweto. The production company will be filming a pilot soon, which they will be promoting to various TV stations. They’re looking for a chef to be the presenter of the show – below are the details:
- Vibrant, energetic chef between 20-35 years of age of any race
- The show is 24 minutes long
- The chef has to be able to demonstrate knowledge of different dishes of all styles
- The chef will also be presenting at the same time as cooking, so the chef needs to be able to get as much as possible from the ‘interviewee/guest’
- Creative and passionate
- Knowledge of languages other than English and Afrikaans would be a bonus
- Be willing to go the extra mile and do research on guest/interviewee
We’ll be having the auditions on Friday the 22nd of May at 10:00 at the SACA offices.
Please could you indicate to myself via email at sarah@saca.co.za whether you will attend the auditions – it really is a fantastic opportunity and I’m looking forward to seeing anyone interested on Friday!
Kind Regards,
Sarah Marjoribanks

Billy Ghallager’s dream of a skills kitchen at the Centre for Culinary Excellence on the campus of UJ Hotel school is coming true and you can be part of it...
.Attached please find an idea of how a chair could be sponsored. It could either be bought by your kitchen brigade collecting together and donating R3000 (which buys a chair with a plaque with something like “donated by the brigade at the Indaba Hotel 2009 “ and further sponsorship for the new skills centre) or you, the executive chef can donate R3000 yourself or you can talk your GM into sponsoring a chair. We would love chefs to immortalise themselves !!! !!If you, your team or your GM is interested please contact Janet at SACA . 011 478 7250 or janet@saca.co.za

The Skills Kitchen Project Has Begun
The ground of the Southern Sun Centre for Culinary Excellence, incorporating the Vulcan Skills Kitchen, was broken on the 12th of February. The project is in partnership with SACA and the University of Johannesburg's School of Tourism and Hospitality, and was developed in order to address the skills shortage in South Africa. Upon completion in May, this huge project will provide the venue to address any chef’s needs in a kitchen comparable to those in the hospitality industry. Other committed partners in this project include Rich's, Bid Ingredients and Fedics. The skills Kitchen Project will have a dedicated desk at the SA Chefs Experience stand at Hostex Johannesburg, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre form the 15th to the 18th of March. Please visit us for all of the information and course details for this world-class facility that’s being built in the heart of Johannesburg. For more information e-mail janet@saca.co.za

Team South Africa Trials 2009
MARCH 2009
JOHANNESBURG HOSTEX 15-18 MARCH
COULD YOU REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY ON THE GLOBAL CULINARY STAGE?
The search is on for chefs who will become members of South Africa’s National Culinary Squad,
train with Team South Africa and go on to compete against the finest chefs in the world.
The four-year cycle, starting with selection from around the country, has begun! And you could
be part of the exciting and challenging world of global culinary competitions.
Are you creative? Do you work well in a team? Can you handle extreme pressure? Are you
ambitious and driven to succeed? Do you set a goal and achieve it, no matter what it takes?
These are the qualities we’re looking for in the chefs who will be selected from trials held in
Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban this year to select the new members of our Team South
Africa Squad.
These chefs, along with junior members and those who qualify by virtue of our new credit
accrual system through entering other SACA-accredited competitions, will train with the awardwinning
members of our National Culinary Team, who earned a gold medal in the hot kitchen at
the IKA Culinary Olympics 2008. Over the next four years, the Squad will be put through its
paces, learning everything there is to know about international competitions and, for those who
have the endurance, drive and sheer will to succeed, they will go on to represent South Africa
globally from 2008 to 2012.
It’s a long-term, four-year commitment to your industry and your country – but the rewards are
unequalled. The opportunity only comes round once every four years so why not see if you
have what it takes to be a member of South Africa’s National Culinary Team.
