The world of disability is vast and complicated. For the Deaf and hearing impaired, life is particularly challenging especially in the area of education and job opportunities.

Sikelelwa Alex Msitshana, A very pro-active deaf lady herself joined an organisation for the Deaf and was given the responsibility for the organisation’s work placement programme. In two short years with this programme, she managed to place close to fifty Deaf applicants in various organisations in the country. This experience gave her an insight into and an understanding of the challenges faced by Deaf people in accessing empowerment opportunities. She came to realise, know and understand the importance of helping other Deaf people to get empowered as well.

Unfortunately late in 2015 her organisation could no longer support the work placement office and Alex knew that the only way to continue her work would be by starting her own company. Proudly, late in 2015 the Deaf Empowerment Firm (DEF) was founded.

The majority of their candidates are entry level candidates however, they do have those candidates who have received training in specific skills (eg Chefs Training) and for employers who are in need of these skills, DEF will make these qualified candidates available.

The services offered by DEF are extended beyond the recruitment process. A full on-boarding service is offered at a nominal fee. This service goes beyond just ensuring that the Deaf candidate is settled into the job, it also educates Management and employees in the organisation of the important role that they also have to play to ensure real success. They provide a sensitisation process that allows you the employer, the opportunity to learn how to communicate with the Deaf in the work place in order to alleviate those fears that most employers have with regards to the communication process. So they will not leave you to your own devises once you employ their Deaf candidates but will guide you through the process so as to maximise the benefit of the placement for both the employer and the Deaf candidate.
